BluOS integrates Apple Music without relying on AirPlay

Apple Music is integrating directly into BluOS: the player receives music from the service without the phone having to carry the audio through AirPlay. Lenbrook announced the change on October 20 and places its arrival during this month through a free firmware update for compatible devices.

BluOS turns the phone into a remote, not the source

The integration provides access to Apple Music through the BluOS app. The audio device handles playback, while a phone or tablet is used to select and control content. This changes how it works, rather than simply adding another button to send sound from a phone.

According to Lenbrook, this reduces dependence on the mobile device’s connection and battery. AirPlay 2 is not disappearing: it remains another way to play content on devices that support it. Existing users should not interpret the announcement as support being withdrawn.

Free update, separate subscription

The release includes compatible products from Bluesound, NAD Electronics, PSB Speakers, Cyrus Audio, DALI Speakers and Monitor Audio. That is not a promise to add the feature to every model those brands have sold: owners should check support for their specific device and the availability of its update.

Apple Music requires an active subscription. The free part is the BluOS update, not the music catalog. The integration includes recommendations, curated playlists and radio programming, as well as the ability to share playback across several devices using the platform’s multiroom features.

That domestic use connects with products such as the BluOS-equipped PSB iQ2: the platform’s appeal is bringing sources and devices together in one environment, rather than requiring an entire system replacement to add a service.

Native playback does not mean confirmed lossless quality

The official announcement does not specify the codec or resolution Apple Music will use in this integration. It therefore does not justify promising lossless audio, high resolution or Dolby Atmos merely because the player accesses the service directly.

The eCoustics coverage of Apple Music’s arrival on BluOS also highlights those unanswered questions. The confirmed improvement concerns access and control. For existing Apple Music subscribers, checking their model’s update makes sense; for anyone comparing devices on streaming quality, that specification is still missing.
