High iPhone Duo Demand Stretches Shipments to January and Complicates In-Store Purchase on October 23
The iPhone Duo goes on sale this Friday, October 23, and anyone who hasn’t made a prior reservation shouldn’t count on buying it that day at a store. The demand for Apple’s first foldable has pushed online shipments into January, and according to Apple Store staff gathered by MacRumors, the company has instructed its employees to discourage customers without reservations from expecting to walk out with the device.
iPhone Duo Reservations Pushed Shipments Out to January
Reservations opened on October 16, and within half an hour, all configurations in Apple’s online store in the United States were already showing shipments for January 25. The 256 GB variant—the most economical option—schedules its delivery for January in the U.S., UK, and Australia, while some specific configurations are even dated as far out as 2027. With those lead times, the online store is left practically without units for the Christmas campaign.
Apple described reservation demand as “nothing less than extraordinary” in a statement and assures it is working to deliver devices as soon as possible. The starting prices of $1,999, £1,999, and A$3,499 remain the reference point, but the real cost of this purchase is now the wait time.

October 23 In-Store Launch: The Emergency Exit That Is No Longer Available
On Friday, October 23, in theory, is the day when the first reservation shipments begin arriving and when the iPhone Duo becomes available in stores. That plan has become complicated: Apple Store employees told MacRumors they received instructions to warn customers without reservations that there may not be units for direct sale on launch day, and that they will feel disappointed if they come anyway.
Apple’s own online store asks users to recheck availability on Saturday, October 24 for in-store pickup. Reservations for pickup were briefly active when reservations opened and then were deactivated, so the Saturday 24 message does not guarantee stock on that day.
It is also unclear whether this warning is limited to the United States or applies to other markets as well, and Apple has not commented on which stores will have units on October 23. TechRadar, which reports the information, recommends not assuming you can walk into an Apple Store on Friday and leave with the foldable.
What Remains for the Buyer Who Didn’t Reserve
This bottleneck does not appear out of thin air. In September there were already talks of production problems and very limited manufacturing in August, and production yield rate was one of the weak points in the final stretch: the iPhone Duo started its last month with only a 60% production yield. With that foundation, reservations being exhausted in minutes and physical stores unable to meet day-one demand were simply two ends of the same supply problem.
If you didn’t reserve, there is no fast lane today: neither online shipping arrives before January nor does the store promise units on October 23. At this price and with this wait queue, it makes sense to wait for production to normalize before paying for a foldable that you won’t have in your hands this autumn.
