AT&T has acknowledged that a portion of the iPhone 18 Pro Max units connected to its network in the United States cannot complete calls, text messages or data connections, and has asked its customers to update “immediately” to iOS 27.0.1. The notice arrives after thousands of users reported the problem on Apple’s support forums, Reddit and MacRumors, and after many affected users said the update has resolved nothing.
According to MacRumors, the carrier sent a text message to its customers warning that some phones may be left “unable to complete calls, messages or data, including 911,” and pointed them to Settings → General → Software Update to install iOS 27.0.1. The carrier is thus acknowledging in writing a fault that until now existed only in user reports.
AT&T’s urgent notice that the update itself does not mention
The uncomfortable detail lies in the release notes. Apple included no reference to the AT&T network problems among the fixes in iOS 27.0.1: according to MacRumors, that update focused on a Face ID issue on the iPhone 18 Pro models. In other words, the carrier points users to a version that, in its official documentation, says nothing about the problem it is meant to address.
Those affected describe either persistent or intermittent behavior: the iPhone loses its connection to AT&T’s network and typically enters SOS mode, leaving the phone without voice, SMS or data. The exact cause is unconfirmed and Apple has not yet commented publicly on the matter.
The modem clue Apple will not confirm
One detail fuels suspicion: the US version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only one of the iPhones unveiled last month equipped with a Qualcomm cellular modem, according to MacRumors. The iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone Duo and the rest of the international Pro Max versions, including the one sold in Spain, use Apple’s C2 modem. The company has not confirmed whether that hardware difference is related to the fault.
It is worth separating the two hypotheses. If the cause is software, a new update — for example an iOS 27.0.2 — would be enough to close the issue. If the cause is hardware, the matter would be considerably more serious for the users trapped in it, because a simple patch would not fix it.
There is also a recent precedent in the family: Apple already confirmed that an iOS 27 update would fix the restarts on the iPhone 18 Pro, a different case but one that shows the first software batch for these models is still being ironed out.
What changes if you are in Spain
This specific fault does not affect iPhone 18 Pro Max units bought in Spain. Here the phone uses Apple’s C2 modem and does not depend on AT&T, a carrier that does not operate in the Spanish market, so there is no urgent update to make for this reason.
The only scenario with real impact is that of anyone who has imported the US model and uses it on an AT&T network: in that case the update to iOS 27.0.1 is the only official route available, and if the problem persists after installing it, the sensible move is to claim with both the carrier and Apple rather than wait in silence. For the Spanish buyer, the verdict is clear: there is nothing to change in the purchase decision because of this news, though it is worth following how the case evolves in case Apple ends up acknowledging a hardware problem.
